Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, widely used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and otitis media (middle ear infections) in children. Its effectiveness arises from its ability to interfere with the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, specifically by binding to a target enzyme called penicillin-binding protein (PBP) located within the cell wall. This binding action inhibits PBP activity, which is essential for cell wall formation and maintenance. Consequently, the bacterial cell wall becomes weaker and less stable, leading to its rupture and the demise of the bacterial cells. It's important to note that cefixime's efficacy is limited to treating bacterial infections and is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or influenza.
