Valsartan 80mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure, reducing blood pressure by inhibiting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and reducing fluid retention. Valsartan, a selective competitive angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) antagonist, blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, leading to decreased vascular contractility and cardiac venous return. Its actions on angiotensin II receptors directly involve vascular smooth muscle contraction and tubular sodium reabsorption in the kidney.
