Description

Tobramycin Ointment, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to specific proteins on the bacterial cell membrane, particularly the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes. This binding interferes with protein synthesis, which is essential for the survival and multiplication of bacteria. The primary mechanism involves disrupting the decoding process during protein translation. Tobramycin binds to the 16S rRNA of the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to the misreading of mRNA, preventing the proper formation of peptide bonds, and ultimately resulting in the production of nonfunctional or toxic proteins. This disruption of protein synthesis leads to the death of susceptible bacteria, effectively controlling and eliminating the bacterial infection on the skin or eye surface when applied topically.
