Ondansetron 8mg injection works by selectively blocking serotonin 5-HT3 receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) in the brain. This mechanism inhibits serotonin-mediated afferent vagal stimulation, which is responsible for triggering the vomiting center in the medulla oblongata. By blocking these receptors, ondansetron effectively prevents nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and postoperative surgical procedures.
